Making Some Changes
As you know I like taking wildlife photos. I go out almost everyday. I'm hiking 3 to 9 miles at a time and some days I will do two or thrre hikes. Well I'm not as young as I use to be (go figure) and its time I make a change to my hobby. How will I make it and why is what is going to be covered in this post. So here we go...
So when I am out hiking I am going down trails and sometimes no trails, up hills up mountains and back down. My feet and ankles are not in the best shape and my shoulders and hands have arthitis. Its the cost of all the fun I had when I was younger. Anyway I would be packing 4 lenses with me most of the time, just in case I needed a different style or reach. packing a 200,400,600 and 800mm lens with you as well as at least one tripod and a chair for when I would be just sitting and waiting or in a hide as well as bear spray, snacks and water I would be packing 30 to 40 pounds. Rarely did I ever use all the things I packed with me, infact I don't think I ever did. So I'm cutting down on the gear I have. I'm trading in 3 of my lenses and getting one in exchange. This one lens will cover all 4 lenses in range and will actully give me a higher quality of image. Now how big of a change will this be in what I an packing around, well if I am packing just the 600mm with my R6 mark ii I'm packing just shy of 10 pounds with the battery grip and the lens cover. With this new lens I will be saving 3+ pounds just with the one lens change. Now I will also be gaining 200mm in reach. The Canon RF 200-800mm F6.3 to 9 is the lens I am getting. (I forgot to say that) So I will be able to use this one lens for all my needs and will have the RF 100-400mm as a backup. So most days I will only be packing 1 lens and one camera. I will still be bringing a tripod and chair as well as snacks and water but I'll be cutting the amount of weight in half at least. Getting old is no fun. But its better than not getting old (if you know what I mean).
So I took out my 800mm lens the other day to say goodbye. It was a good lens even though it had an F stop of 11 I still got tons of great shots with it. Here are a few that I got on ots last day.
The new lens will be an F9 at the long range so it will let in more lihgt and give a better background. When it gets here I plan on taking it out for a few days just to get used to how it works. I'm sure I'll get some great shots right off the bat. But as I get to know the lens and its strengths and weaknesses I will be getting way more great shots. I have thougt long and hard on this before I made the deal, it wasn't easy by any means. I did a ton of research on it and I'm sure its the best option for me, plus I'm actually going to be getting a little money on the deal so thats a plus.
So thats that and lets just hurry up and see were this all takes me and my photogaphy..
