Making Some Changes

Image
As you know I like taking wildlife photos. I go out almost everyday. I'm hiking 3 to 9 miles at a time and some days I will do two or thrre hikes. Well I'm not as young as I use to be (go figure) and its time I make a change to my hobby. How will I make it and why is what is going to be covered in this post. So here we go... So when I am out hiking I am going down trails and sometimes no trails, up hills up mountains and back down. My feet and ankles are not in the best shape and my shoulders and hands have arthitis. Its the cost of all the fun I had when I was younger. Anyway I would be packing 4 lenses with me most of the time, just in case I needed a different style or reach. packing a 200,400,600 and 800mm lens with you as well as at least one tripod and a chair for when I would be just sitting and waiting or in a hide as well as bear spray, snacks and water I would be packing 30 to 40 pounds. Rarely did I ever use all the things I packed with me, infact I don...

Rare and hard to get shots

Image
So today I had only a few hours to get out and take photos before the rain returned. It started a little slow, i hiked a new trail for about a mile without seeing anything. I turned around and headed back to the car. I was about 150 feet above the Rogue River, I came to a clear shot of the river and seen a Great Blue Heron standing at the edge of the river with a perfect reflection. Then I headed to Well Creek trail head. It was quiet and low clouds were hanging to the top of the trees. I was surprised to see a Bald Eagle sitting in the to of a tree, I had never seen one on this trail before and I've hiked it almost weekly over the last 5 months. but there it was. then I came across the smallest woodpecker we have here in the USA, The Downy Woodpecker. It's hard to get good shots of these little guys, they don't sit still. But I guess today was my day. Then I ran into a heartbreaker, one of my favorite Tweety birds to photog...

Got Some New Species

Image
Last week was a pretty good week for photography. I hiked just over 22 miles last week and it was worth it in more ways than one. Yeah, I got some cool shots but I also got a pease of mind. For years I have had trouble with my feet. I spent 13 years doing 20,000 steps a day on concrete, and it extracted a high price. The pain would drive me to tears. That is a ton of pain as I have been told by more than one doctor I have a scary high pain tolerance. For the last for months I have been taking it easy-er on my walking and doing hills and trails. It has paid off. Sure I still would have pain in the evening, but it was manageble and the next day they would be back to normal. I'm thinking another month or two and I will be pain free! Anyway you are here for photos and I will start it off with one I took with my phone as it was so small and my camera lens was so big. Now I have tried looking this Lizard up and can't seem to get a good answer. Its either a Northern Aliga...

Getting Some Fur

Image
As the weather changes and the birds move out of the area as is done every year I get more opportunities to get Animals. I'm not sure why that is but it always works that way. Animals are my number one thing to photograph, birds are just a side gig (except birds of prey). Like today, I only photographed one bird and thats just because I couldn't tell what bird it was. When I checked on my tablet when I got home it was a Blue Jay, nothing e cool. I started on a hike this morning just before 7am. I wanted to get out before it got hot. Yesterday I started aroung 9am planning on a 3 mile hike, which is my norm. It ended up at just over 9 miles. I was really worried that I over did the hike and my feet would be hurting the rest of the day and not be able to walk today. That did not happen. There was some pain in my left foot but not very bad, and this morning it was fine. It was a little chilly as I started out but I knew that with a backpack and two cameras I would be fine unti...

The Black Phoebe (Fee-Bee)

Image
The Black Foebe (Pronouced Fee-Bee) is a memeber of the flycatcher family of which there are around 400 members.... Thats right its not an exclusive club. Ther about the size of a sparrow. They as you've figured out they catch bugs. They catch them mostly in flight, which is the main reason they came on my radar. I love watching them fly off a limb and snatch a bug in flight. That and they always look dreesed for a party, as you can see below. They are found near a water source most of the time and from what I have found will most likely stick around all year, but if it gets to cold they will move south for a bit. The last three photos on here is of one that had just had a bath. He let me get pretty close. So thats what I know and now you know as well.....I'm hitting the road this weekend. I will hopefully get some good photos while I'm gone.

Here There Be Dragons

Image
So as some of you know I have moved to South western Oregon. Where I live there are tons of places to go for wildlife photos. I have become fond of taking Dragonfy pics and have been learning more about them. For one, they have remained pretty much unchanged for th last 320 million years. The only real change is their size. They went from having a Two foot wingspan to about a 3 inch wingspan. They are also thought to be the most effcient hunters on the planet with a seccess rate of 90 to 95%. What I am going to post here are photos of the Dragons and I will attempt to name them as best I can. Some maybe repeted only because the females of some of the spieces are hard to tell apart. So here we go.... This one is called a "Blue Dasher" and its a female. This one is the male. This one I see often, its a Common Whitetail Dragonfly. It has a wide body compared to the ones above. Now this one I have a little more info on. ...
