The Queen Has fallen, The passing of Grizzly 399

Image
As the title states, the queen of the grizzlies, grizzly 399 has passed. She was struck by a car yesterday and did not survive. She was 28 years young, which is actually quite the advanced age for a Grizzly in the wild. I first photographed her in 2020 on my first ever trip to the greater Yellowstone area. She had 4 Cubs that year and I was lucky enough to catch her and the Cubs while they were still young. Over the years I made at least one trip a year to photograph her. I wasn't always successful, (She obviously didn't get the memo that i was coming over to see her.) My first trip to Yellowstone this year I was able to catch her and her Cub Spirit at the side of the road, which she was famous for doing. That was on my birthday and that day was the best day of wildlife photography ever. Here are the last photos I took of her. Not being able to photograph 399 again is a real let down, but is one I have been preparing for with her advanced age. The last few year

I dub thee "Shaggy"

Day one in Yellowstone wasn't a big bear day. (Not that day two was either) I seen one Black Bear cub and couldn't get a good photo of it as I was stopped on the road with no where to pull over. I snapped a quick shot of it in the shade as it was walking away from me. Not worth posting the photo of so I wont. (see how I am) Day two I seen two count them TWO Black Bears. One was petty far away but the photos turned out okay-iish so I will post one for the first photo of this blog. see if you can find it. The second one was much, much closer and I was able to get some really good shots of it eating Ants, Termites and or Grubs. (I wasn't that close to see what it was eating) It tore into a log at one point and was digging in the ground as well as walking along logs and eating something. Now the Title of this post is me naming something "Shaggy" It was this Bear. One look at it and you'll know why I named it that. I don't know if its a male or female, its y

Birds of prey/raptors pt 1 baby owls

Image
yeah it's about time right? well here is the first one in the series. I'm focusing on baby owls as they are always one of my favorite things to take pictures of and babies are always cute. So sit back and please enjoy.. this is one of two baby burrowing owls that I have found. the other is camera shy and didn't want anything to do with me. Someone has posted the location of these owls on some bird site and there has been a lot of people hanging around taking photos. I have located two other neat areas but I'm not telling anyone where to find them. some people have no respect for the birds or the pricey of other people's lands. The above photos are of a baby great horned owl. I have been taking photos of it's parents for a couple of years now. they have gotten used to me to the point where if I wake them they just go back to sleep. I'm okay with that really. My next scheduled post will be on a mixed bag of raptors, but there ma

Surprise, surprise I'm taking another trip

Well I know its been a while and I'm sorry about that. I have been super busy at work and having split days off (for one week) really didn't leave me much time for some of the things I enjoy doing, such as posting on here. But I am here now and going to share some of the photos I have taken. I haven't gone to far from home as I didn't have the time, but really you don't have to go far to get good photos. You only have to go far to get photos of different things. Speaking of different things I am taking a quick trip to Yellowstone/Grand Teton National parks in a few weeks. I wasn't planning on going again until September but I have Three good reasons for going on this one. One my Brother will be there fishing. Two my Sister (whom I haven't seen in about a million years) will also be there being a tourist. And Three, there has been a baby white Bison born in Lamar Valley. I can't pass up a chance to see my Sister. I don't often get the chance and t

The Queen Of The Grizzlies

Image
For the last Five years or so I have been making a trip to Yellowstone, Once or Twice a year. My first trip I wasn't having any luck finding a Grizzly to photograph. I desided that I would make a trip down into the Grand Teton National park where there it is said grizzlies are right on the side of the road. Well that was true and sure enough the first Grizzly I saw was none other than Grizzly 399. Still to this day one of my all time favorite photos. 399 and her Four Cubs. Let me give you a little history on this Bear. Now I'm not an expert on her and I'm not saying this is 100% fact. This is what I have learned and heard over the years on this Bear. I do how ever believe that it is all factual. She is the First Grizzly at least in this area that has had Four Cubs and raised them all to the age that they were sent out on their own. ( I think that only One is still alive now though) She has a Daughter (610) That has a home range next to her. and they someti

My Big Day!

Image
My big day, and it truely was. One it was my Birthday and it was also the best day of wildlife photography I have ever had. More bear than a man has the right to see in one day with the first one being The QUeen of the Grizlies #399 and her cub. I not only seen Bears though and I will give you a peak at what I did see, but first I have to show "The Tree" Now there is nothing really speical about this tree. What keeps me taking its picture is the fact that it looks like it is ouy of place. Its the only one like it on the mountain side. I have taken its picture every trip I've taken to Yellowstone. Maybe I'm nuts but I like it. I turned 64 yesterday and I spent it having the best day ever! I seen so much wildlife it took Three hours longer to get out of the park because everytime I turned a corner there seemed to be something there. But lets start with the first thing I seen that morning. I call it "The Urban Fox" This Fox lives i
